When Life throws a massive curve
This past Saturday went from fun to tragic in the ten seconds it took to walk from my friends' car on the way back from the bar to the lobby of my building. In the lobby was my friend Shelley, who lives three floors above me, looking a little disheveled and stressed, sitting there in her clubbing outfit on the phone.
Her and my friend Oana's apartment had burned down.
Of course, being that it was two hours into April Fools' Day, I was sceptical/in disbelief.
They had received a call from the fire department around 1am telling them what had happened, and they thought it was a prank as well until they arrived home. The fire had started in the large closet off of the living room. Nothing left of the closet, nothing left of the living room. Both of their bedrooms sustained massive smoke damage, but luckily there was a lot that was salvageable. They're rooms looked like a bomb had gone off, beds overturned, windows completely bashed out. Unfortunately for someone parked in the courtyard below, the screens and windows that the fire department busted out landed on two cars and busted one up pretty good.
While they were obviously upset about what happened, they also appreciated the fact that no one had been in the apartment at the time, and that despite losing a lot of their possessions, they didn't lose anyone.
